How to Copy a Video Link: The Right Link for Every Platform
A greyed-out download button means the link itself was not accepted. Here is what the right link looks like on each platform, and how to spot a wrong one before you paste it.
Most apps put a Copy link option one tap away, so it is easy to assume any link will do. It will not. Every StatusDownloader tool checks the shape of a link before it fetches anything, and a link that points at the wrong thing, a profile instead of a post, a whole playlist instead of one video, a shortened address the tool does not follow, is turned away before anything downloads.
This guide covers how to copy a video link that the downloader accepts on each platform the site supports, what the accepted link shapes look like, and how to read the message when a link is refused.
Why a Link That Looks Fine Gets Refused
Each tool page compares what you paste against the link formats it knows. On the TikTok, Twitter (X), Pinterest and Snapchat pages, a link that does not match leaves the button next to the box greyed out and marks the box as invalid, with no message at all. That silence is the clue: the video may be perfectly public, but the tool never got as far as asking for it.
The YouTube page checks the address in two steps. A link from outside YouTube greys the button out the same way. A YouTube address that is not a video, Short, playlist or channel gets through the first check and is refused by the server with a message instead.
The Rule That Applies on Every Platform
Copy the link to the individual post, not to the account that posted it. A downloader saves one specific video, photo or Story, so it needs the address of that one item.
HOW IT WORKS, STEP BY STEP
- Open the video itself, so it has its own page or fills the screen, rather than looking at it inside a profile grid or a feed.
- Use the platform's Share button and choose Copy link, or, on a computer, copy the full address from the browser's address bar.
- Paste the whole link, including the https:// at the start. Every tool expects a full web address and does not accept one that begins with www. or with the site's name.
- There is no need to trim tracking text from the end of a YouTube or TikTok link. The YouTube tool ignores the ?si= part, and the TikTok tool removes everything after the question mark on its own.
- If the button stays grey after you paste, the link is not a shape that page accepts. Compare it with the formats below before trying again.
What the Right Link Looks Like on Each Platform
The Instagram Story Downloader takes links containing /p/ for posts, /reel/ or /reels/ for Reels, /stories/ for Stories, including /stories/highlights/ for a Highlight, and /s/ Highlight share links. Typing a username, an @username or a profile link opens a list of that account's current Stories instead of a single item. Older links containing /tv/ are not accepted there.
TikTok
Use the link to the video itself: tiktok.com/@username/video/ followed by a number, or /photo/ in place of /video/ for a photo post. Short links in the form vm.tiktok.com/…, vt.tiktok.com/… and tiktok.com/t/… work too. A profile link, tiktok.com/@username on its own, is not accepted, because it does not point at one video.
YouTube
Links from youtube.com, m.youtube.com, music.youtube.com, youtu.be and youtubekids.com are recognised, /shorts/ links included. Playlist and channel links are accepted as well, and are handled as a playlist or a channel rather than one video. One catch: a video link that still carries &list= followed by a playlist ID is read as that whole playlist. To get only the one video, delete everything from &list= onward. Auto-generated Mix lists are the exception; on a video link they are ignored and you get the single video.
Twitter (X)
The link must point at a single post and contain /status/ followed by the post's number, on either x.com or twitter.com. A profile link, or a shortened t.co link, is not accepted.
Ordinary facebook.com post, video and Reel links work, as do fb.watch short links and /share/ links. The m. and web. versions of facebook.com are accepted too.
A pin link, pinterest.com/pin/…, works, and the short pin.it form works as it is. Regional addresses such as pinterest.co.uk, pinterest.fr, pinterest.de, pinterest.ca, pinterest.com.au and pinterest.co.in are recognised as well.
Snapchat
Snapchat links work when they point at Spotlight or at a public profile: snapchat.com/spotlight/…, snapchat.com/add/username or snapchat.com/@username.
Messages That Point at the Link
Some refusals come with words. Each of these, shown exactly as the site displays it, means the link needs changing rather than the video:
- "Could not recognize this link as a video, Short, or playlist." The address is on YouTube but is not a video, Short or playlist link.
- "This is an auto-generated YouTube Mix, which cannot be downloaded as a playlist. Open a video from the Mix and paste that video's link instead." You pasted the Mix itself rather than a video from it.
- "That short link did not lead to a TikTok video. It may have expired." The vm. or vt. short link no longer resolves to a video.
- "Twitter / X needs a link to a specific post (…/status/123…)." Shown on the MP3 Audio Downloader when an X link has no /status/ part.
A message that mentions a private account, a deleted post or a region block is different. It means the link was read correctly and the content itself is not available, so copying the link again will not change the result.
If you paste many links in quick succession, you may instead see "Too many requests from this IP, please try again after 5 minutes." That is a limit on how often one connection can use the site, not a fault in the link. Waiting five minutes clears it.
Pasting a Link Into the Wrong Tool
Paste a link from another supported platform into the Instagram or Facebook downloader and the page takes you to the matching tool, carrying the link with it. The YouTube page does the same for Instagram and Facebook links, and the MP3 Audio Downloader switches to the right platform tab on its own. The other tool pages keep the button grey, so if nothing happens, check that you are on the page for the platform the link came from.
Not sure which page a link belongs on?
The home page reads the link you paste, selects the matching platform and sends you to that platform's downloader, so it is the safe place to start when you have a link and no idea which tool it needs.
Open the Social Media Downloader
Copy the post, not the profile, keep the whole address, and paste it where it belongs. The tool takes it from there.
